Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson asked state lawmakers on October 23 to clarify how Ohio's suppressor and short-barreled-firearm restrictions interact with ATF's October 9 enforcement guidance.

On October 23, 2026, Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson asked Senate President Rob McColley and House Speaker Matt Huffman to clarify Ohio firearm law after ATF announced on October 9 that it would stop enforcing federal approval and registration requirements for covered short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, and certain other weapons.

Wilson's letter says Ohio law currently prohibits creating, possessing, or using those items without ATF approval and warns that the federal policy may create confusion. This is the attorney general's stated reading and a request for legislative action. It is not a bill, amendment, court ruling, or change to Ohio law.

ATF's own guidance says it will continue to accept voluntary registrations and that state and local restrictions remain in force. Ohio's existing statute still controls. Not legal advice. Verify current law before acting.
