The Justice Department opened an investigation into alleged delays in firearm-permit issuance by the Middletown and Waterbury police departments.

On October 22, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice opened an investigation into the firearm-permitting systems of Middletown and Waterbury, Connecticut. The release says the inquiry will examine whether the municipalities unnecessarily delay permits for residents.

The Civil Rights Division says the review focuses on the two police departments' permitting systems. DOJ cited the Second Amendment and the Supreme Court's warning in Bruen about lengthy licensing delays that can deny public carry. This is an investigation, not a final finding that either municipality violated federal law.

The action concerns Connecticut. It does not change Ohio law or create an Ohio permit rule. Not legal advice. Verify current law before acting.
